Billingshurst is a village in West Sussex, and as this map shows, Wisborough Green is not far away. Not only that, but slightly to the north of Billingshurst, is a small place called Five Oaks - is this where GH got the name for Five Mile Ash?

The book opens with the London to Littlehampton stage-coach lurching in to Billingshurst.

Littlehampton is on the south coast of England, directly opposite the French Coast, between Dieppe and Le Havre.
