The Convenient Marriage
Heyer's romance set in 1776 was first published in 1934. Jane Aiken Hodge in her biography of Heyer says;
"This is the first of the historical novels that beings with the marriage of the protagonists and ends with their reaching an understanding at last. This rases, at once, the distinction Georgete Heyer makes between sex and love. Careful reading reveals that Rule has, in fact, slept with his Horry, and has begun to neglect her as misunderstanding grows between them. He is in love with her; she will learn to love him , just like the heroine of Instead of the Thorn. But sex is something that happens offstage and is kept in its place. It is important, never all-important."For more on characters you can check out Georgette Heyer, The Queen of Regency Romance or read selected extracts at The Novels of Georgette Heyer or finally check Sally Houghton's Georgette Heyer Homepage.
This web site is just a collection of bits and pieces that might be of interest to people who read the book. Most things have found a home on some page or other - one picture that I haven't as yet found a place for, but I thought might interest people, is the picture of a Sedan Chair to the left which is dated 1740. A similar one might have been used by characters in "The Conveninent Marriage" is set.
